Laundry in Korea: your accommodation or a self-service laundromat?
Choose between a laundry service, guest machines and an external laundromat by checking garment care, machine instructions and a payment method you can actually use.
Laundry in Korea: your accommodation or a self-service laundromat?
When clean clothes run low, first establish who will do the washing. A laundry service takes your clothes; a guest laundry room gives you machines to operate. An external self-service laundromat is another option, but only if its machines, payment method and opening conditions work for you. Start with the clothes you need tomorrow rather than washing everything at once.
Ask your accommodation what “laundry” means
Ask whether there is a guest-use washer, a staff-handled laundry service, or neither. For a service, confirm the accepted garments, pricing basis, submission deadline and return time before handing anything over. A return after checkout will not solve tomorrow’s shortage.
For self-service, ask about access hours, a separate dryer, detergent and payment. Toyoko Inn Seoul Dongdaemun 2 lists coin laundry on its official property page. That is a specific example, not evidence that every hotel has guest machines. A hotel accepting your card for a room does not establish that its washer accepts the same card.
If you have ordinary machine-washable clothes and access to suitable machines, staying in the building may save a trip. Otherwise ask reception to help find a nearby laundry option and confirm how you can use it before carrying your bag there.
Read each garment before choosing a cycle

This wool garment’s label specifies dry cleaning or careful hand washing.
A wash-tub symbol concerns washing; its number is a maximum temperature, and bars underneath indicate gentler treatment. A hand-wash instruction is not permission to choose an ordinary machine cycle. Check drying separately: a circle inside a square denotes tumble drying, and a crossed-out version prohibits it. GINETEX explains these symbols; follow your garment’s full label, including written instructions.
Keep items needing different treatment separate. If a label is missing or unclear, ask a professional cleaner rather than guessing with a hot cycle. For permitted hand washing, also check your accommodation’s rules and where the garment can dry. Machine-washable does not automatically mean tumble-dryable.
At the machine, settle the choices before paying
Identify 세탁기 (washer) and 건조기 (dryer), the machine number, load limit and available programmes. Check detergent provision, the displayed price, whether drying costs extra, and the estimated finish time. Allow for waiting, transferring clothes and drying, not just the wash timer.
WASHENJOY’s published machine guide describes loading, closing the door, choosing a cycle and then paying; the machines illustrated start when the required amount is received. That guide also describes automatic detergent and softener dispensing and coins or a rechargeable store card. Those are instructions for the equipment described, not universal Korean rules. A store card is not necessarily a bank card. Read the actual machine’s instructions before adding detergent or money; if dosing is unclear, ask rather than adding an extra dose.
If the app or payment does not work
Wash&PAY advertises machine availability, QR payment and completion notifications at participating WASHENJOY stores. Its feature list does not guarantee signup without a Korean phone number or payment with a foreign-issued card.
Show staff these questions: “앱 없이 사용할 수 있나요?” (Can I use it without the app?) and “해외 발급 카드로 결제할 수 있나요?” (Can I pay with a foreign-issued card?). Ask which alternative that location actually offers; do not assume cash is accepted. If payment fails, check the transaction and machine status before trying again. If you cannot establish a usable method, keep your clothes and ask your accommodation to confirm a staffed service, its accepted payment and return deadline. Do not hand over essential clothes until the service and return time are confirmed.
