On Seoul’s subway, check the train’s final destination and whether it stops at your station, not just the line number. Learn how to choose a direction, use express and last trains, and recover from a wrong turn, including the conditions for re-entry.

On Seoul's subway, the station name, line color and number, station number, and train's final destination help you find the right direction. A single line can have branches and several termini, and an express train may skip your stop. Operating information was researched on September 12, 2026. Check timetables and the coverage of the 15-minute re-entry policy on the day you travel.

Tap just one card at the gate

Tap a single transit card, such as Tmoney, on the reader and check the display before passing through. If you do not have one, buy a single-journey card for your destination at a station ticket machine. In addition to the fare, you pay a 500-won deposit, returned when you insert the card into a deposit-refund machine at your destination.[1] The adult base fare with a regular transit card is 1,550 won for up to 10 km, with additional charges for longer distances.[7] If your balance is insufficient, look for the top-up or fare-adjustment option on a machine.

Before going down to the platform, compare the line color and number with the direction and final destination on the display. With branches and several termini on the same line, an inbound or outbound label alone is not enough. Use the line color and number together with the station number to find your way. If you enter the platform for the wrong direction, first look for a connecting passage inside the gates. If there is none, press the staff assistance button rather than going through an emergency gate on your own.

Follow transfer signs, not exit signs

At an interchange, follow the Transfer/갈아타는 곳 signs inside the gates, then look for the next line's color and number.[1] You can usually transfer between lines without going outside, but additional fares may apply for the total distance traveled or for a line such as the Shinbundang Line, which has a separate charge.

Express trains and last departures

Not every line has express trains, and express trains do not stop at every station. Along with the 급행/Express label on the train or display, check whether your destination is a stop. Line 9's official station guide marks express stops separately. For your travel date, check the departure station and direction, whether the timetable is for a weekday, Saturday, or public holiday, and whether the train stops at your destination.[8] Express Bus Terminal is the English name of a station, not a label for an express train. You can also plan a route with Seoul Metro's Cyber Station.[4]

Last trains do not all depart at midnight. They vary by station, direction, day, and final destination, and a late train may terminate before your stop. Check the last departure from your station, the train's displayed terminus, and the final connection onto your next line at any transfer station. Seoul Metro's interstation travel-time data also notes that standard running times may vary with train operating conditions.[9] Use the operator's timetable for that day alongside the platform display.

If you go the wrong way or miss your stop

Get off at the next station and look for a passage to the opposite platform inside the gates. If you need to leave the paid area, ask station staff first whether re-entry is covered.

The 15-minute re-entry policy treats re-entry as a transfer when you tap back in through a gate for the same line at the same station within 15 minutes of tapping out, using an eligible transit card in a participating operating section. It is available only once per rail journey. Single-journey cards and commuter passes are excluded, and distance-based additional fares may still apply.[6][10]

Seoul's September 26, 2023 notice announced that the re-entry window would increase from 10 to 15 minutes from October 7, 2023, applying to the Seoul Metro-operated sections of Lines 1–8, Line 9, the Ui-Sinseol Line, and the Sillim Line. Subsequently, a June 15, 2026 announcement by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport extended the policy from June 20 to Korail-operated Lines 1, 3, and 4, as well as the Suin-Bundang, Gyeongui-Jungang, Gyeonggang, Seohae, and other covered lines.

The Korail expansion excludes the Airport Railroad, Shinbundang Line, Gimpo Goldline, Uijeongbu Light Rail, Yongin Light Rail, Incheon Lines 1 and 2, and the Kkachiul–Seoknam section of Line 7. Ask station staff or the operator about coverage at the station and line you will use. For Seoul Metro-operated sections, call 1577-1234.
