Chuseok 2026: an archive of decisions, not a current itinerary

The statutory holiday ran Thursday 24 to Saturday 26 September 2026, with Chuseok Day on Friday 25 September.Source 1Source 4 Some people also took Sunday the 27th, but as checked on 17 September, Monday 28 September was not automatically a substitute holiday. A temporary-holiday declaration would have required a government announcement; work and school calendars also needed checking. The travel information below was checked on 17 September 2026. Even then, the sound order was ticket first, venue opening second, weather and same-day notice last—not an assumption that old schedules would hold.
If the preferred intercity train had sold out

KORAIL's Chuseok notice and live availability in KORAIL+ were the places to check for seats, including those released after payment deadlines.Source 2 A search result or screenshot was never a paid reservation: station pair, train number, booking and payment needed confirmation within the official service. For September 2026 journeys, high-speed trains serving Suseo were included in sales through KORAIL+ and KORAIL's website. Former SR-only members needed an integrated membership procedure for benefits, though guest purchases remained possible.Source 3
Searching Seoul, Yongsan or Gwangmyeong against Busan or Gupo widened the station combinations. Conventional rail and official express/intercity bus bookings were alternatives to high-speed trains. Shifting the long journey to before 23 September or after the 27th was a historical option; those dates are now past. Unofficial resales, impractically tight connections and a seat shown before payment were poor substitutes. Delays and platform changes needed a same-day check in operator apps and station displays.
A holiday does not give every venue the same hours
Government offices and banks closed on public holidays, while palaces, museums, markets and shops followed their own schedules.Source 1 A palace could announce special access while a venue such as the National Palace Museum listed closure on Chuseok Day. Both the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center and the particular venue's notice mattered.Source 6 The useful details were last admission, booking, a shifted weekly closing day and separate exhibition or guided-tour closures. A map's “open” badge alone was not enough for a family-run restaurant or market stall; a call or official social account was better.

Seoul: plan around one confirmed opening
The proposed fallback was one palace or museum whose opening had been confirmed, paired with a less reservation-dependent walk. Seoul advertised a free program on 26 September, 10:00–17:00, at the Seoul Baekje Museum plaza and lobby and the Seoul Baekje Children's Museum lobby.Source 4 The Hangang authority advertised Moonlight Chuseok at Jamsugyo Moonlight Square, Banpo Hangang Park, on 27 September in two sessions, 15:00–16:00 and 17:00–18:00.Source 5 Both dates have passed; advertised does not mean independently verified as held. Rain, queues and registration could change the plan. If canceled, the exterior of Gyeongbokgung, Cheonggyecheon or a Hangang park offered a ticket-free walking alternative, subject to conditions on the day.
Busan: the street and its businesses are different propositions
A daylight visit to Gamcheon Culture Village and an evening at subway-accessible Gwangalli would have been less dependent on individual indoor openings. But accessible lanes did not guarantee that Gamcheon's cafés, galleries or shops were open. It is a residential area: keep noise down and stay out of private property.

Visit Busan advertised a Chuseok moonlight drone-and-laser show at Gwangalli Beach on 26 September and warned of cancellation or delay a day before or on the day because of rain, high winds, typhoon conditions or communications problems.Source 7 The waterfront walk and meal were therefore the base plan, not a long trip solely for a show. Some venues, including the Bosu Book Street Tourist Information Center, explicitly listed Chuseok Day as closed.Source 8

A holiday food, not an opening notice
Songpyeon, filled rice cakes, are a traditional Chuseok food, not evidence that any particular shop was open in 2026. VISITKOREA’s food guide describes the custom; shop hours still required a separate check.

What the 24-hour check actually meant
The day before travel, verify a paid ticket, departure station and train number in KORAIL+, venue reservations and opening notices, event registration and rain policy, and a few nearby restaurant alternatives. On the morning, look for train or bus delays, platform changes and same-day museum or visitor-centre notices. Strong wind or heavy rain should trigger an indoor alternative, while an unconfirmed opening needs an immediate fallback on the map. These are historical checks, not live operational advice: consult fresh official notices for any new journey.
