First trip to Korea: stay in Seoul, or add Busan, Gyeongju or Jeju?

Choose between staying with Seoul's palaces and cultural spaces or adding Busan's sea, Gyeongju's historic sites or Jeju's coast. See how to divide cities and nights around your interests, usable days and arrival and departure points.

If you want to explore palaces, spend time in neighborhood lanes and enjoy the Korean culture and exhibitions that interest you, start by considering a trip based entirely in Seoul. To add a setting where the sea meets the city, consider Busan; for time among the remains of Silla, consider Gyeongju. If volcanic landscapes and the coast are your main reason for traveling, set aside a dedicated stay on Jeju.

You can decide how many cities to visit after choosing the experiences you want. First, mark your arrival and departure dates on a calendar and look at the full days in between. Weigh the new scenery another city would bring against the time spent packing and moving to your next accommodation. That will help give your trip its shape.

When you want several days in Seoul

In Seoul, you can set aside different days for palaces and old neighborhoods, art galleries or museums, and cultural spaces that interest you. From Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces to the cultural spaces of Hongdae, the Seoul Tourism Organization's introduction to Seoul gives a sense of the variety.

Give Seoul more days if you would like to compare palaces rather than visit just one, or spend the evening in a neighborhood after seeing an exhibition there. You will also have room to change plans when it rains or you need a rest. Returning to the same accommodation saves you from repacking each time you change cities, too.

If you have a performance or exhibition planned for a particular date, plan your Seoul stay around it first. If your list of places to visit already fills several days before you leave home, Seoul alone gives this trip a clear purpose. Rather than adding a distant city simply because you have time left, you could revisit a neighborhood you liked or leave a day loosely planned.

Once you have chosen Seoul, move on to choosing where to stay in Seoul around your plans. Separating the choice of cities for the whole trip from the choice of a neighborhood to return to each day makes it easier to narrow down accommodation.

Busan for the sea and a city stay

Add Busan if you want to walk along a beach, relax looking out to sea and still enjoy city scenery in the evening. At Gwangalli, you can take in the streets along the beach and the sea with Gwangan Bridge in view. Have a look at Visit Busan's introduction to Gwangalli for a sense of this setting.

If you want to see the beach by day and the sea in the evening, reserve days for the waterfront before planning a string of stops on arrival followed by departure the next day. If most of your Busan stay ends up being spent between the station and your accommodation, you may miss the days you took away from Seoul.

If you plan to travel between Seoul and Busan by train, use Korail's operating route guide to understand the broad connection, then look for trains on your travel dates in the booking interface. When planning the trip as a whole, add the journeys between your accommodation and the station at both ends to the time on the train. Keep the transfer day to a little time in the neighborhood where you arrive, so you can focus on what you want to do from the next day onward.

Once you have chosen Busan, this Busan itinerary separating the coast and the old city center can help you plan your time there. The 3 days and 2 nights in its title describe one suggested itinerary, not a minimum stay that suits every traveler.

Gyeongju for time with the remains of Silla

If Seoul's palaces appeal to you, compare Gyeongju as well. In Gyeongju, you can spend time around Silla burial mounds, former palace grounds and historic sites such as Cheomseongdae and Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond. If your interest extends from exploring buildings inside and out to the wider landscapes around burial mounds and ruins, choose places to see from Gyeongju's introduction to its central sightseeing area.

Staying in Gyeongju suits a slower visit with time to read the historical explanations. Consider an overnight stay if you would rather spend the evening near the sites you saw by day, or visit somewhere else the following day, than simply stop once at each famous place. If the part of this trip you most look forward to is a beach walk, those nights may serve your plans better in Busan.

You can include both Busan and Gyeongju, but adding two cities also means more days changing accommodation. Start by asking whether there is something you want to do in each. If you want both the sea and history, divide some of your Seoul days between them; if one appeals more, you can stay longer in that city. A brief visit to Gyeongju from Busan and an overnight stay in Gyeongju also differ in where you spend the evening and how you move your luggage.

If you arrive by train, use Gyeongju Station in Geoncheon-eup, listed in Gyeongju's transport guide, as your arrival point and allow separately for the journey to your accommodation. Leave room on arrival day rather than filling a schedule as though sightseeing begins the moment you step off the train. If you decide to stay, continue with choosing accommodation around the focus of your Gyeongju trip.

Jeju when time on the island is the focus

If coasts and volcanic landscapes are central to your trip, plan your Jeju stay first. It is a good fit when you want to spend longer in one part of an island rather than keep moving between cities.

In eastern Jeju, Seongsan Ilchulbong was formed by volcanic activity in shallow water, while Seopjikoji has coastal scenery combining rocks and volcanic landforms. Deciding which stretch of coast you want to see first makes it easier to choose an area to stay in.

If you add Jeju to a Seoul trip, leave time for journeys between airports and accommodation before and after your flights. Once you include check-in, baggage drop and security screening, as covered in Jeju Airport's airport guide, a transfer day is different from a full day on the island. Look for flights on your dates in Jeju Airport's flight schedule and with the airline you plan to use. Also check whether the airport at the Seoul end is the same as the one on your international ticket.

It helps to decide how you will get around the island while dividing your nights. Jeju Airport's public transport guide covers buses and taxis. If you plan to use buses, narrow down the area you want to visit and choose accommodation suited to journeys around it. If you rent a car, include collection and return time in your transfer days. Compare staying in one area and exploring nearby with changing accommodation every day.

Wanting to see the sea does not mean you need both Busan and Jeju. Give more days to Busan if you are drawn to the beach and city evenings, or to Jeju if volcanic coasts and time on an island appeal more. If Jeju is the main purpose of this trip, you can also shorten Seoul and stay longer on the island.

Put where you will sleep on the calendar, not just the total days

The examples below are editorial suggestions for comparing combinations of cities. They are not official recommended durations or minimum stays for each city. All count from arrival in Korea to departure and assume flights into and out of Incheon Airport. Day 1 is for arrival formalities and the journey to accommodation in Seoul; the last day is for the airport journey and departure. Neither counts as a full sightseeing day. Any extra time from early or late flights can be added after you have made your actual bookings.

Divide your time among Seoul's palaces, neighborhoods and cultural spaces

• Stay and nights: 7 days, 6 nights; all 6 nights in Seoul

• Travel days: arrival on day 1, departure on day 7

• Days without a transfer: days 2–6, giving you 5 days in Seoul

Add one seaside or historic city to Seoul

• Stay and nights: 10 days, 9 nights; Seoul 4 nights → Busan or Gyeongju 3 nights → Seoul 2 nights

• Travel days: arrival on day 1, change cities on day 5, return to Seoul on day 8, departure on day 10

• Days without a transfer: days 2–4 and 9 in Seoul, days 6–7 in your chosen city; 6 days in total

Divide your time between Seoul and Jeju's coast

• Stay and nights: 10 days, 9 nights; Seoul 4 nights → Jeju 3 nights → Seoul 2 nights

• Travel days: arrival on day 1, travel to Jeju on day 5, return to Seoul on day 8, departure on day 10

• Days without a transfer: days 2–4 and 9 in Seoul, days 6–7 on Jeju; 6 days in total

In the second example, choose either Busan or Gyeongju for the nights of days 5, 6 and 7. The two days without a transfer are days 6 and 7. Return to Seoul on day 8, spend the nights of days 8 and 9 there, then leave Korea on day 10.

The Jeju example divides the nights in the same way, but its travel days include airport procedures before and after the flights, as well as travel on the island. Try fitting the area you most want to see into your two full days on Jeju; if that feels too short, move a day from Seoul to Jeju. Starting with what you want to do on the island makes it easier to divide your stay than squeezing Jeju in as a short stop between Seoul and another city.

Even on a 10-day trip, a late arrival on the first day and an early departure on the last make the days in between more valuable. The examples above do not count days spent traveling between cities as full sightseeing days either. You may be able to add a short walk after the actual journey, but it is better not to fill that day with several visits you are determined to make.

A different departure city changes your final nights

If you choose a return ticket through Incheon, you need time to come back as well as days outside Seoul. The examples above bring you back to Seoul from Busan, Gyeongju or Jeju on day 8, leaving the last 2 nights there. In particular, separating the domestic flight back from Jeju from your international departure day reduces the pressure of leaving the island on the day you fly out of Korea. Returning on an earlier day does not remove every possible effect of delays or cancellations, however. If circumstances change, adjust your plans according to your airline's guidance.

You can also compare tickets that arrive in Seoul and depart from another city, such as Busan. This is an option when actual flights fit your dates and next destination. Removing the journey back to Seoul could let you stay longer in the last city or shorten the trip overall. In that case, do not simply keep the final Seoul nights from the Incheon return examples: start again with the last night in your departure city.

If you are considering a domestic flight and an international flight bought separately on the same departure day, ask the airlines first whether the airports are the same, whether you need to collect your baggage again and what would happen to the next ticket if the first flight were delayed. A gap between the two departure times alone is not enough to judge the connection as comfortably timed.

When choosing cities, think first of a day you really want to spend somewhere new, rather than days you want to take away from Seoul. Once you know whether that means an evening by the sea, a day among Silla remains or a day relaxing on Jeju's coast, it becomes clearer where to give more nights. If what you want to do elsewhere is not yet clear, you can start with a Seoul stay and vary what you do each day.
