Where to Stay in Seoul: Choose Among Five Areas by Your Itinerary
Myeongdong, Hongdae, Jongno, Gangnam, or Jamsil? Compare the places you will visit repeatedly, your first-day route with luggage, and your last-day departure before booking.

Starting with the “most popular neighborhood” can make choosing a place to stay in Seoul harder. First, mark the places you plan to visit on a map, then compare how you will arrive with your luggage on the first day and how you will leave on the last. This guide looks at Myeongdong, Hongik University Station/Yeonnam, City Hall/Gwanghwamun/Jongno, Gangnam Station/Samseong, and Jamsil by the focus of your itinerary, not by hotel rankings.
Crossing between areas? Start with your most tiring day
Write down whether you will return to the palaces and old city center repeatedly, come back late from Hongdae, or attend a scheduled event at COEX or in Jamsil. Places you will visit several times are more useful for choosing a base than places you will visit once a day. Even if the route from the airport is convenient, a hotel far from the station exit or up a hill can feel very different when you are pulling a suitcase on day one. Instead of trusting a listing that says “near the station,” check the actual walking route from the property's street address to the station exit.
• City Hall, Gwanghwamun, and Jongno: Consider this area if you will spread visits to the palaces, Jeong-dong, and Ikseon-dong across several days. These are not all the same station, so choose an address that fits the order of your visits.
• Myeongdong: Consider it if you will spend a lot of time shopping and eating in the central shopping district and plan to visit Namsan too. The most convenient subway station and airport bus stop vary by property.
• Hongik University Station and Yeonnam: Consider this area if you will spend time in Hongdae and Yeonnam and want to look into the all-stop Airport Railroad train connection. The express train does not stop at Hongik University Station.
• Gangnam Station and Samseong: First distinguish between appointments near Gangnam Station and those near COEX or Samseong. Do not assume the two are within the same walking area just because both are called “Gangnam.”
• Jamsil: Consider it if Seokchon Lake or Jamsil's performances and amusement facilities are central to your trip. Check the route from your property to the venue entrance shown on your ticket separately.
This is a quick decision guide, not an assessment that guarantees the noise level, safety, or accessibility of an entire neighborhood. Even within one area, booking considerations differ between a main road and a side street, or one side of a station and the other.
More days in the old city center: City Hall, Gwanghwamun, and Jongno
If you have a day for Deoksugung Palace and Jeong-dong, compare places around City Hall on a map. If you often plan to visit Ikseon-dong's lanes and other places in Jongno, look around Jongno 3-ga. Mark Gwanghwamun and Gyeongbokgung Palace separately as well. Rather than grouping all these places under “Jongno hotels,” narrow your choices by the places you will actually visit.

Even if you stay in the old city center, repeated trips to Hongdae or Jamsil will add up. If you have a stroller or heavy luggage, check for an elevator at the station exit and examine the route to the property's entrance, not just the station name. Check official guidance again when you visit for palace opening days and admission procedures.
Spending more time in the central shopping district: Myeongdong
Myeongdong makes it easy to plan around shopping and meals. You can add a visit to Namsan, but the walking route there is not the same from every property in Myeongdong. Open the address of each “Myeongdong” search result and see whether Myeongdong Station, Euljiro 1-ga Station, or your airport bus drop-off stop is actually more convenient.
Even after taking the Airport Railroad to Seoul Station, you still have to get to the property's entrance. If you choose an airport bus, you still need to carry your luggage from the drop-off stop. Consult the airport arrival transport guide for ways to reach Myeongdong, then compare them again using your candidate property's address and arrival time. If you expect to stay out late, read recent reviews, but do not assume any particular room will be quiet.
Spending more time in Hongdae and Yeonnam: Hongik University Station
Hongik University Station is a useful starting point for planning your first day's route because it serves the subway and the all-stop Airport Railroad train. The Airport Railroad express train, however, goes to Seoul Station and does not stop at Hongik University Station. Once you choose a train type, check the route from the station to your property too.

Hongdae and Yeonnam may use the same station, but the blocks where you spend your time and your evening routes can differ. If the Yeonnam and Hongdae walk is on your itinerary, decide which side you will spend more time on first. Check not only the nearest exit to your property but also the walking route for a late return and the last train on that day. You can compare ways to reach the area from the airport alongside the Hongdae arrival guide.
Divide your destinations even within “Gangnam”
If you have repeated events or appointments at COEX, compare addresses near Samseong or Bongeunsa Station; if your appointments are repeatedly near Gangnam Station, compare addresses there. Search results may label both “Gangnam,” but they are not one place reachable on foot from the same station exit. Check your actual event entrance separately.
If most of your sightseeing is elsewhere, think about how often you will return to your property. Conversely, if you have several plans in Gangnam, it may be more convenient to center your stay on them. This choice depends on the addresses of your actual destinations and the routes between them, not the neighborhood name. For your arrival from the airport, open the Gangnam arrival transport guide and check the drop-off point that applies to your property.
Have scheduled plans in Jamsil? Stay in Jamsil
If a walk around Seokchon Lake, Jamsil's amusement facilities, or a performance is the main purpose of your trip, you can look at places to stay in Jamsil first. The Seokchon Lake–Lotte World area, Olympic Park, and Jamsil Sports Complex are separate destinations, not places reached directly from one station exit. Use the Seokchon Lake and Olympic Park itinerary comparison to decide which place you will visit on a given day.

If you have a performance ticket, mark the venue's exact entrance and your route back after the event on a map. If you are traveling with family, consider how much energy you will have for the return trip rather than adding another distant area to the evening. Follow the organizer's or venue operator's guidance on the day of your visit for operations and entry rules.
Before booking, compare just two addresses
• Note your arrival terminal, approximate time you can begin traveling onward, and where you will depart on your last day. Your plane's landing time is not the time you can start traveling after entering the country.
• Mark places you will actually visit repeatedly and venues for events you have already booked on a map. Do not choose a distant property just because an area is famous.
• Check the street addresses and building entrances of your final two candidates. For the first-day route with luggage, account for station exits, elevators, crosswalks, and bus drop-off points.
• Check transportation separately for your latest return and your last day. Recheck train and bus schedules, last services, event end times, and check-in rules shortly before your trip.
• Compare the final amount payable, cancellation terms, room location and facilities, and recently dated reviews. An area description does not guarantee that an individual property is operating or accessible without barriers.
If this is your first visit to Seoul, choose based on where you will want to return on your most tiring day, not the “most famous area.” Once you have an address, from the airport to your accommodation and from Seoul Station to other areas can help you examine the final leg of your first day's journey.
