Seoul to Busan: start with your hotel, not the train timetable
A Seoul Station departure can be effortless from Myeongdong and awkward from southeastern Seoul; Suseo reverses that calculation. The Busan end matters just as much. Compare the journey from one accommodation to the other, including station access, boarding time and the final metro ride. Since 1 September 2026, KTX and the former SRT service have operated together under the KTX name; book both departure stations through Korail+ and check availability, times and the final fare for your date.[1][2][4][7] KORAIL's 31 August 2026 integration announcement also describes revised fares, so older SR prices are not current quotes.

KTX from Seoul Station is a straightforward first comparison if you stay in central Seoul, Hongdae or Myeongdong, especially when your next address is around Nampo or Seomyeon. Compare the journey time and fare displayed for your actual train, then allow time to reach the station, find the platform and travel onward in Busan.[1]

Seoul Station connects with Metro Lines 1 and 4 and airport rail, but arriving at the building is not the same as reaching the platform. At Busan Station, Metro Line 1 serves Nampo and Seomyeon. For Haeundae, change at Seomyeon to Line 2.[10]
KTX from Suseo deserves the first look instead if you stay in Gangnam, Songpa or near Suseo. It, too, arrives at Busan Station. The old SR/SRT fare table, including standard KRW 52,600 and first-class KRW 76,300, is historical, not a price to expect after integration.[2][3] Compare the actual Korail+ departures and payable fares from Suseo and Seoul Station. From Jongno, Hongdae or Myeongdong, the longer trip to Suseo may outweigh any ticket-price difference.

When high-speed seats are unavailable, look at other Korail departures and the ITX-Saemaeul, ITX-Maeum or Mugunghwa options that the search actually returns. These may be direct or require a connection and generally take longer.[1] Historical adult one-way reference fares included KRW 28,600 for Mugunghwa and KRW 42,600 for ITX-Saemaeul-type service; neither is a current quote. Read the train name, duration, transfer, arrival station and payable fare in the results.
The coach may leave you at Nopo, not Busan Station
The principal express-coach comparison is Seoul Express Bus Terminal (Seoul Gyeongbu) to Busan Central Bus Terminal (Nopo). Its Busan terminal is not the railway station.[4][5] Check the class and price of the chosen KOBUS departure, including any night supplement.[4] Add terminal access, the rest stop, traffic and the last leg to the displayed road journey.
Nopo connects with Busan Metro Line 1. Seomyeon and Nampo lie on that line; choose a current transfer route for Haeundae rather than assuming one connection always wins.[10] The luggage hold can help with large bags, but it does not remove road-delay risk.

If Busan West (Sasang) suits your accommodation better, search origin and destination terminals separately in the intercity booking portal.[6] Do not assume a daily Sasang departure from Dong Seoul or Seoul Nambu. When an actual service appears, Sasang has a useful Line 2 connection toward Seomyeon and Haeundae. A late-night coach is an option only if it runs on your date and you can get from its arrival terminal to your hotel after Busan's local transport closes.[4]
The flight is about an hour; the trip is not
Compare Gimpo domestic to Gimhae domestic if Gimpo is easy from your Seoul address and you are staying around Sasang, western Busan or the Line 2 corridor. A rough door-to-door allowance is 30–80 minutes to Gimpo, around an hour for domestic check-in and security, about an hour flying, 20–40 minutes for disembarkation and baggage, and 35–90 minutes into Busan: 3 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 30 minutes or more. The airline's actual check-in cutoff takes precedence over this planning allowance. Check KAC flight information, then the carrier's own final price including baggage and refund conditions.[7][8] Weather delays and the ground journey to Haeundae can erase the apparent speed advantage.
Driving is mainly worth comparing for a group or an itinerary outside the city. Even before stops and congestion, reckon with around five hours behind the wheel; with breaks, city traffic and parking, six to eight hours or more is a broader planning range. Query Korea Expressway Corporation for the precise entry and exit tollgates and vehicle class, then add fuel, one-way rental return and parking.[9] For a city-only visit, train plus local transport is usually simpler.
Work backward from your Busan address
For Seomyeon, a Busan Station rail arrival continues on Line 1, Sasang on Line 2, and Gimhae via light rail to Sasang and Line 2. For Nampo or Jagalchi, Busan Station and Line 1 form the simpler connection; Nopo adds a long southbound ride, while the airport adds transfers. For Haeundae, compare Busan Station–Seomyeon–Line 2 against Sasang–Line 2 toward Jangsan, or Gimhae–light rail–Sasang–Line 2. Check whether your actual hotel is nearest Centum City, Dongbaek, Haeundae, Jung-dong or Jangsan.[10]

Before buying, compare access from your Seoul door to Seoul Station, Suseo, Seoul Gyeongbu and Gimpo, and from Busan Station, Nopo, Sasang or Gimhae to your Busan door. With children, older companions or large luggage, a reserved-seat train plus a taxi at one end may reduce transfers. Leave around 20–30 minutes at a rail station, time to locate the coach bay, and ample time before your airline's stated cutoff. Holiday departures and busy Friday/Sunday periods may sell out early or change their extra-service schedules.[1][2][4][6][7][8]
If one train sells out, search other KTX departures from both Seoul Station and Suseo before trying conventional rail, the Seoul Gyeongbu coach or a Gimpo flight. Returned seats are not guaranteed. For a night arrival, include a taxi in the comparison if Busan Metro has stopped running.
