SIM, eSIM or pocket Wi‑Fi for a trip to Korea?

SIM, eSIM or pocket Wi‑Fi for a trip to Korea?
If you are using an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone on your own, start with eSIM options. A physical SIM is another choice if your phone does not support eSIM or you would like help with installation. Pocket Wi‑Fi can connect the phones and laptops of a group traveling together. Alongside price, compare when the validity period starts, speed limits, and pickup and return conditions. Match the connection to your trip
• For an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone, consider an eSIM. Before ordering, check the EID, when the validity period starts, the rules for deleting or reissuing a profile and getting a refund, and hotspot support. For example, LG U+ states that its Data eSIM validity period starts with the first data use, activation is required within 60 days of purchase, and cancellation or refunds are not available after payment.Source 1
• For a phone without eSIM support, or if you need help with installation, consider a physical SIM. Look at passport verification, SIM size and APN settings, and prepare somewhere safe to keep your original SIM.
• For a group connecting several devices, including laptops, consider pocket Wi‑Fi. Compare the number of simultaneous connections, battery life, deposit, and return location and deadline.
• If you need to make calls or send texts in Korea, compare Data+Voice products. A product that assigns you a Korean number does not necessarily offer the same functions as one that supports outgoing calls.
• If you also need SMS on your home number, prepare your dual-SIM settings. Find out how to disable data roaming on your home line and what roaming charges apply to texts and calls.
For eSIM, check the sales region and carrier lock
Even the same phone model may have different eSIM capabilities depending on the country where it was sold. Look for eSIM and EID in your settings or the manufacturer's documentation, and ask your existing carrier whether the phone is unlocked. Even if an EID is displayed, you still need to check the provider's supported models, sales regions and network requirements. LG U+ requires an unlocked device and explains how to display the EID using *#06#.Source 1 Do not share or publish screenshots showing device identifiers.
You may need an internet connection to add the QR profile. A QR code stored only on the phone you are setting up can be difficult to scan, so securely prepare another screen, a printout or the supplied manual activation code. The devices a QR code can be used on and the rules for reinstalling it vary by product. LG U+ states that an installed eSIM cannot be recovered or reissued after it is deleted.Source 1 If you want to install before traveling, read the product's validity-start conditions first. Installation day and the first day of the validity period may be different.
Having a Korean number does not mean every function is included. LG U+ distinguishes Data Only from Data+Voice and states that Data Only does not include outgoing calls or texts.Source 1 If you plan to call your accommodation or a reservation provider, look separately at outgoing calls, sending and receiving texts, and top-up conditions. LG U+ states that Data Only does not support SMS verification. It distinguishes SMS verification for restaurant and taxi apps on its Voice/SMS products from identity verification for banking and government services, which it does not support.Source 1 A data-only plan is also an option if you only intend to make calls through apps.
For a physical SIM, check the size and store your home SIM safely
A physical SIM is useful if your phone does not support eSIM or you would like installation help. Visitor products may require passport verification.Source 1Source 2 Read the SIM-size and APN instructions for your phone, and keep the original SIM and tray safe when replacing the card. On a dual-SIM phone, select the Korean line for mobile data. After pickup, it is best to test the connection before leaving the airport counter.
Pocket Wi‑Fi suits a group that stays together
Consider pocket Wi‑Fi if you are unsure about phone compatibility or want to connect a laptop as well. You will need to manage the battery of a separate device. If the group splits up, anyone who moves away from the device will lose access to the shared connection.
Look in the reservation details for the simultaneous-device limit, data-use policy, power bank, deposit and loss charges. The return terminal and deadline also need to fit your itinerary. Even if Incheon Airport's facilities guide lists a T1 pocket Wi‑Fi counter, check its location and hours for the day you need it.Source 3
If you need texts on your home number, set the Korean line as the default for data and switch off data roaming on your home line. Your carrier may still charge roaming fees for texts or calls received on your home number. Test the default voice line and iMessage/RCS settings before departure.
Test the connection after airport pickup
Incheon Airport T1 lists KT, SKT and LG U+ centers, some marked as open 24 hours. This does not apply to every terminal, provider or counter.Source 3 Match your arrival terminal, the area you can access after immigration, and your booked product's pickup and return points against the airport information and your reservation.
After pickup, use airport Wi‑Fi to enable the new line and set that line's data roaming according to the product instructions. Check the APN, then open a webpage, a map and a messaging app. If the product includes calls or texts, test those too. If it does not connect, ask staff for help before leaving the counter.
